The San Juan City local government proudly recognized 33 San Juan students for winning medals at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad – Heat Round held on Oct. 23, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora presented the 33 students during the city’s morning assembly on Monday, Nov. 14.

“I feel happy and proud to be greeted with news that not just one, not just two, but 33 of our young San Juaneño students from our very own public school winning in another international competition, and at mathematics at that with 100% winning rate,” Zamora said.

“These achievements are products of perseverance and team work by our LGU, the principals, teachers, students, and parents who all joined hands in making sure our students get the best education in the country,” San Juan City Schools Division Office Superintendent Dr. Cecille Carandang noted.

Zamora explained that all the participants bagged a medal each from the competition – a gold, nine silver, and 23 bronze medals.

The mayor said these awards are added to the growing number of international hauls of the San Juan City Academic Senior High School led by its OIC-Principal Dr. Rina A. Angeles. Six months ago, the school produced six winners in the Hongkong International Mathematical Olympiad.

The school also launched a school-based innovation called the Academic SHS-MOTP (Senior High School – Mathematical Olympiad Training Program) Online 2022, a program implemented by Adrian Monilla and Angeles.

Monilla was previously recognized in the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad as Outstanding Coach by the Math Olympiad Training League for coaching winners in two consecutive international mathematical events, while San Juan City was hailed as Top Performing School in the Philippines.

“People used to doubt the quality of education our public schools provided but San Juan City is a testament that with the LGU and DepEd working hand in hand, we can produce the best students from our public schools that this country can really be proud of,” Zamora stressed.

The city government also previously cited 21 student achievers in the fields of sports and mathematics and distributed certificates and financial incentives to the awardees to further inspire them in excelling in their fields of studies.

The students received cash ranging from P3,000 to P58,000 courtesy of the LGU.

During the ceremony, De La Salle University student athlete Alisha Claire Del Campo received the biggest incentive of P58,000 for her achievements as a player for the school’s football team and as a forward of the Philippine Women’s National Team – winning in the ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship and the Sea Games 2022 in Vietnam.

She was followed by Ivan Travis Cu, a Grade 7 student of Xavier School who got a total of P50,000 for his achievements in the Asian Nations Cup Online Under 14 Open Chess Team Championship, Open Division, and the National Age Group Chess Championship Grand Finals in Bali Indonesia.

Eighteen of the 21 student achievers who received cash prizes were from San Juan City public schools and won in international competitions in Sports, Math, and Science.

“I am very proud of the achievements of our public school students here in San Juan City. This is a good indication that our investments in our public schools are paying off and that our batang San Juaneños are receiving the best education in the country,” the local chief said.
