San Juan eyes vaccination sites in public schools

The San Juan City local government said on Monday, Aug. 15, that it will set up Covid-19 satellite vaccination sites in its public schools as part of its preparations for the return to face-to-face classes (F2F) on Aug. 22, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

In an interview with ANC, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora underscored the importance of getting vaccinated and boosted against the virus following the detection of several cases of the Omicron subvariants which are said to be more transmissible and have the ability to escape the vaccines.

As of August 12, Zamora said that San Juan has recorded 97 active Covid-19 cases, with 95 of them either mild or asymptomatic.

“Well we can see still that even fully vaccinated individuals get Covid, but what we should look at really is the severity of their condition. Let’s not focus just on the number of cases but let’s look at how many are severe, how many are critical, how many are mild to asymptomatic,” Zamora said.

“Our hospital utilization rate is also low, where majority of Covid-19 patients in our hospitals are actually residents from other cities and provinces,” he added.

He attributed this to the city’s proactive Covid-19 response plan, as well as the San Juaneños initiative to get themselves vaccinated and boosted, adding that the city leads in the country’s Covid-19 booster administration after tallying 99.47 percent.

“We have gone to the extent of going house-to-house for our booster vaccination. In fact, I have acted as an ambassador for the vaccination program. I believe as mayor, it is my duty to push for a high vaccination rate. This is something we have achieved. We remain to be number one in terms of number of fully vaccinated individuals in relation to our target population and also in the administration of the first booster,” Zamora said.

Aside from house-to-house vaccination, the city government had also set up vaccination sites in malls and other high volume commercial establishments to encourage people to get vaccinated and boosted.

“We really have to be proactive. In fact, once we open our public schools on August 22, we will set up satellite vaccination sites in all 13 public schools. Again, we cannot force children or their parents to get boosted but we can always encourage them,” Zamora said.

The local chief urged the public to get inoculated against the virus saying that getting vaccinated and boosted are the only way the country can go back to normalcy.
