Families living along San Juan River banks relocated to Rizal
The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), in cooperation with the National Housing Authority (NHA), relocated 111 informal settler families (ISFs) living along the stretch of San Juan River.
Among the 111 ISFs, 13 families from Brgy. Batis of San Juan City were recently transferred to their new houses in Southville, Baras, Rizal City in cooperation with the NHA, Local Government of San Juan City, and Municipal Government of Baras according to PRRC Executive Director Jose Antonio E. Goitia.
Prior to relocation, the families were living within the ten-meter legal easement of San Juan River, a tributary of the Pasig River.
As part of their social preparation, the families were accompanied to series of site trippings to their relocation site. Part of the trip was to inform them of the most accessible schools, markets and hospitals in Baras, Rizal.
The PRRC also provided the ISFs with trucks and vans to ensure their safe and orderly relocation. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided each family with food supplies such as rice, canned goods and coffee.
“PRRC’s relocation operations are not intended to deprive the ISFs of their basic rights to live. Rather, we are helping them to have a safe environment far from flash floods, which often happen at San Juan River during rainy season,” Goitia said.
“With the help of partner agencies, we also gave them livelihood assistance and disaster preparedness training,” he added.
The recovered spaces will be developed into a linear park to prevent professional squatters and squatting syndicates from occupying them.
